           Aloudringingofoneofthebellswasfollowedbytheappearanceofasmartchambermaidintheuppersleepinggallery,who,aftertappingatoneofthedoors,andreceivingarequestfromwithin,calledoverthebalustrades‘Sam!’

           ‘Hollo,’repliedthemanwiththewhitehat.

           ‘Numbertwenty-twowantshisboots.’

           ‘Asknumbertwenty-two,vetherhe’llhave’emnow,orvaittillhegets’em,’wasthereply.

           ‘Come,don’tbeafool,Sam,’saidthegirlcoaxingly,‘thegentlemanwantshisbootsdirectly.’

           ‘Well,youAREaniceyoung‘oomanforamusicalparty,youare,’saidtheboot-cleaner.‘Lookattheseherebootselevenpairo’boots;andoneshoeasbelongstonumbersix,withthewoodenleg.Theelevenbootsistobecalledathalf-pasteightandtheshoeatnine.
