           Whilehisthreecompanionswerebusilyengagedinprofferingtheirthankstotheirnewacquaintance,Mr.Pickwickhadleisuretoexaminehiscostumeandappearance.

           Hewasaboutthemiddleheight,butthethinnessofhisbody,andthelengthofhislegs,gavehimtheappearanceofbeingmuchtaller.Thegreencoathadbeenasmartdressgarmentinthedaysofswallow-tails,buthadevidentlyinthosetimesadornedamuchshortermanthanthestranger,forthesoiledandfadedsleevesscarcelyreachedtohiswrists.Itwasbuttonedcloselyuptohischin,attheimminenthazardofsplittingtheback;andanoldstock,withoutavestigeofshirtcollar,ornamentedhisneck.Hisscantyblacktrousersdisplayedhereandtherethoseshinypatcheswhichbespeaklongservice,andwerestrappedverytightlyoverapairofpatchedandmendedshoes,asiftoconcealthedirtywhitestockings,whichwereneverthelessdistinctlyvisible.Hislong,blackhairescapedinnegligentwavesfrombeneatheachsideofhisoldpinched-uphat;andglimpsesofhisbarewristsmightbeobservedbetweenthetopsofhisglovesandthecuffsofhiscoatsleeves.Hisfacewasthinandhaggard;butanindescribableairofjauntyimpudenceandperfectself–possessionpervadedthewholeman.

           SuchwastheindividualonwhomMr.Pickwickgazedthroughhisspectacles(whichhehadfortunatelyrecovered),andtowhomheproceeded,whenhisfriendshadexhaustedthemselves,toreturninchosentermshiswarmestthanksforhisrecentassistance.
