           ‘Saynomoreaboutit,’saidMr.Pickwick,lockingthepocket-bookinhisdesk;‘Iamheartilyobligedtoyou,mygoodfriend.Nowsitdownagain.Iwanttoaskyouradvice.’

           Theinternallaughteroccasionedbythetriumphantsuccessofhisvisit,whichhadconvulsednotonlyMr.Weller’sface,buthisarms,legs,andbodyalso,duringthelockingupofthepocket-book,suddenlygaveplacetothemostdignifiedgravityasheheardthesewords.

           ‘Waitoutsideafewminutes,Sam,willyou?’saidMr.Pickwick.

           Samimmediatelywithdrew.

           Mr.Wellerlookeduncommonlywiseandverymuchamazed,whenMr.Pickwickopenedthediscoursebysaying

           ‘Youarenotanadvocateformatrimony,Ithink,Mr.Weller?’

           Mr.Wellershookhishead.Hewaswhollyunabletospeak;vaguethoughtsofsomewickedwidowhavingbeensuccessfulinherdesignsonMr.Pickwick,chokedhisutterance.

           ‘Didyouhappentoseeayounggirldownstairswhenyoucameinjustnowwithyourson?’inquiredMr.Pickwick.

           ‘Yes.Iseeayounggal,’repliedMr.Wellershortly.

           ‘Whatdidyouthinkofher,now?Candidly,Mr.Weller,whatdidyouthinkofher?’

           ‘Ithoughtshewosweryplump,andvellmade,’saidMr.Weller,withacriticalair.
