           Withthesewords,aftermanyprettylittlecoquettishdoubtsandfears,andwishesthatshemightnothavelostit,Maryproducedtheletterfrombehindthenicestlittlemuslintuckerpossible,andhandedittoSam,whothereuponkisseditwithmuchgallantryanddevotion.

           ‘Mygoodnessme!’saidMary,adjustingthetucker,andfeigningunconsciousness,‘youseemtohavegrownveryfondofitallatonce.’

           TothisMr.Welleronlyrepliedbyawink,theintensemeaningofwhichnodescriptioncouldconveythefaintestideaof;and,sittinghimselfdownbesideMaryonawindow-seat,openedtheletterandglancedatthecontents.

           ‘Hollo!’exclaimedSam,‘wot’sallthis?’

           ‘Nothingthematter,Ihope?’saidMary,peepingoverhisshoulder.

           ‘Blessthemeyeso’yourn!’saidSam,lookingup.

           ‘Nevermindmyeyes;youhadmuchbetterreadyourletter,’saidtheprettyhousemaid;andasshesaidso,shemadetheeyestwinklewithsuchslynessandbeautythattheywereperfectlyirresistible.
