           Astheyrattledthroughthenarrowthoroughfaresleadingtotheheartoftheturmoil,thesightsandsoundsofearnestoccupationstruckmoreforciblyonthesenses.Thestreetswerethrongedwithworkingpeople.Thehumoflabourresoundedfromeveryhouse;lightsgleamedfromthelongcasementwindowsintheatticstoreys,andthewhirlofwheelsandnoiseofmachineryshookthetremblingwalls.Thefires,whoselurid,sullenlighthadbeenvisibleformiles,blazedfiercelyup,inthegreatworksandfactoriesofthetown.Thedinofhammers,therushingofsteam,andthedeadheavyclankingofengines,wastheharshmusicwhicharosefromeveryquarter.Thepostboywasdrivingbrisklythroughtheopenstreets,andpastthehandsomeandwell-lightedshopsthatintervenebetweentheoutskirtsofthetownandtheOldRoyalHotel,beforeMr.Pickwickhadbeguntoconsidertheverydifficultanddelicatenatureofthecommissionwhichhadcarriedhimthither.

           Thedelicatenatureofthiscommission,andthedifficultyofexecutingitinasatisfactorymanner,werebynomeanslessenedbythevoluntarycompanionshipofMr.BobSawyer.Truthtotell,Mr.Pickwickfeltthathispresenceontheoccasion,howeverconsiderateandgratifying,wasbynomeansanhonourhewouldwillinglyhavesought;infact,hewouldcheerfullyhavegivenareasonablesumofmoneytohavehadMr.BobSawyerremovedtoanyplaceatnotlessthanfiftymiles’distance,withoutdelay.
