           Seeingthathewasconfusedandagitated,anduncertainwhattodo,Mr.Pickwickcutthemattershortbydrawingtheinvalidedstroller’sarmthroughhis,andleadinghimaway,withoutsayinganotherwordaboutit.

           DuringthewholeofthistimethecountenanceofMr.SamuelWellerhadexhibitedanexpressionofthemostoverwhelmingandabsorbingastonishmentthattheimaginationcanportray.AfterlookingfromJobtoJingle,andfromJingletoJobinprofoundsilence,hesoftlyejaculatedthewords,‘Well,IAMdamn’d!’whichherepeatedatleastascoreoftimes;afterwhichexertion,heappearedwhollybereftofspeech,andagaincasthiseyes,firstupontheoneandthenupontheother,inmuteperplexityandbewilderment.

           ‘Now,Sam!’saidMr.Pickwick,lookingback.

           ‘I’ma-comin’,sir,’repliedMr.Weller,mechanicallyfollowinghismaster;andstillheliftednothiseyesfromMr.JobTrotter,whowalkedathissideinsilence.Jobkepthiseyesfixedonthegroundforsometime.Sam,withhisgluedtoJob’scountenance,ranupagainstthepeoplewhowerewalkingabout,andfelloverlittlechildren,andstumbledagainststepsandrailings,withoutappearingatallsensibleofit,untilJob,lookingstealthilyup,said

           ‘Howdoyoudo,Mr.Weller?’

           ‘ItIShim!’exclaimedSam;andhavingestablishedJob’sidentitybeyondalldoubt,hesmotehisleg,andventedhisfeelingsinalong,shrillwhistle.
