           ‘Don’tbefrightened,Sammy,don’tbefrightened,’saidtheoldgentleman,whenbydintofmuchstruggling,andvariousconvulsivestampsupontheground,hehadrecoveredhisvoice.‘It’sonlyakindo’quietlaughasI’ma-tryin’tocome,Sammy.’

           ‘Well,ifthat’swotitis,’saidSam,‘you’dbetternottrytocomeitagin.You’llfinditraytheradangerousinwention.’

           ‘Don’tyoulikeit,Sammy?’inquiredtheoldgentleman.

           ‘Notatall,’repliedSam.

           ‘Well,’saidMr.Weller,withthetearsstillrunningdownhischeeks,‘it’udha’beenawerygreataccommodationtomeifIcouldha’doneit,and’udha’savedagoodmanyvordsatweenyourmother-in-lawandme,sometimes;butI’mafeerdyou’reright,Sammy,it’stoomuchintheappleplexylineadealtoomuch,Samivel.’

           Thisconversationbroughtthemtothedoorofthesnuggery,intowhichSampausingforaninstanttolookoverhisshoulder,andcastaslyleerathisrespectedprogenitor,whowasstillgigglingbehindatonceledtheway.
