           Nowwhetherthetallhorse,inthenaturalplayfulnessofhisdisposition,wasdesirousofhavingalittleinnocentrecreationwithMr.Winkle,orwhetheritoccurredtohimthathecouldperformthejourneyasmuchtohisownsatisfactionwithoutarideraswithone,arepointsuponwhich,ofcourse,wecanarriveatnodefiniteanddistinctconclusion.Bywhatevermotivestheanimalwasactuated,certainitisthatMr.Winklehadnosoonertouchedthereins,thanheslippedthemoverhishead,anddartedbackwardstotheirfulllength.

           ‘Poorfellow,’saidMr.Winklesoothingly—‘poorfellowgoodoldhorse.’The‘poorfellow’wasproofagainstflattery;themoreMr.Winkletriedtogetnearerhim,themorehesidledaway;and,notwithstandingallkindsofcoaxingandwheedling,therewereMr.Winkleandthehorsegoingroundandroundeachotherfortenminutes,attheendofwhichtimeeachwasatpreciselythesamedistancefromtheotheraswhentheyfirstcommencedanunsatisfactorysortofthingunderanycircumstances,butparticularlysoinalonelyroad,wherenoassistancecanbeprocured.

           ‘WhatamItodo?’shoutedMr.Winkle,afterthedodginghadbeenprolongedforaconsiderabletime.‘WhatamItodo?Ican’tgetonhim.’

           ‘Youhadbetterleadhimtillwecometoaturnpike,’repliedMr.Pickwickfromthechaise.

           ‘Buthewon’tcome!’roaredMr.Winkle.
