           Thisfaculty—(Iverifieditlater)—gavehimarangeofvisionfarsuperiortoNedLand’s.Whenthisstrangerfixeduponanobject,hiseyebrowsmet,hislargeeyelidsclosedaroundsoastocontracttherangeofhisvision,andhelookedasifhemagnifiedtheobjectslessenedbydistance,asifhepiercedthosesheetsofwatersoopaquetooureyes,andasifhereadtheverydepthsoftheseas.

           Thetwostrangers,withcapsmadefromthefuroftheseaotter,andshodwithseabootsofseal’sskin,weredressedinclothesofaparticulartexture,whichallowedfreemovementofthelimbs.Thetallerofthetwo,evidentlythechiefonboard,examineduswithgreatattention,withoutsayingaword;then,turningtohiscompanion,talkedwithhiminanunknowntongue.Itwasasonorous,harmonious,andflexibledialect,thevowelsseemingtoadmitofveryvariedaccentuation.
