           Duringthenineteendaysmentionedabove,noincidentofanykindhappenedtosignaliseourvoyage.IsawlittleoftheCaptain;hewasatwork.InthelibraryIoftenfoundhisbooksleftopen,especiallythoseonnaturalhistory.Myworkonsubmarinedepths,connedoverbyhim,wascoveredwithmarginalnotes,oftencontradictingmytheoriesandsystems;buttheCaptaincontentedhimselfwiththuspurgingmywork;itwasveryrareforhimtodiscussitwithme.SometimesIheardthemelancholytonesofhisorgan;butonlyatnight,inthemidstofthedeepestobscurity,whentheNautilussleptuponthedesertedocean.Duringthispartofourvoyagewesailedwholedaysonthesurfaceofthewaves.Theseaseemedabandoned.Afewsailing-vessels,ontheroadtoIndia,weremakingfortheCapeofGoodHope.Onedaywewerefollowedbytheboatsofawhaler,who,nodoubt,tookusforsomeenormouswhaleofgreatprice;butCaptainNemodidnotwishtheworthyfellowstolosetheirtimeandtrouble,soendedthechasebyplungingunderthewater.Ournavigationcontinueduntilthe13thofMarch;thatdaytheNautiluswasemployedintakingsoundings,whichgreatlyinterestedme.
