           Thisduetisoneofthemostbeautiful,expressiveandterribleconceptionsthathaseveremanatedfromthefruitfulpenofDonizetti.Franznowlistenedtoitforthethirdtime;yetitsnotes,sotenderlyexpressiveandfearfullygrandasthewretchedhusbandandwifegiveventtotheirdifferentgriefsandpassions,thrilledthroughthesoulofFranzwithaneffectequaltohisfirstemotionsuponhearingit.Excitedbeyondhisusualcalmdemeanor,Franzrosewiththeaudience,andwasabouttojointheloud,enthusiasticapplausethatfollowed;butsuddenlyhispurposewasarrested,hishandsfellbyhissides,andthehalf-uttered"bravos"expiredonhislips.TheoccupantoftheboxinwhichtheGreekgirlsatappearedtosharetheuniversaladmirationthatprevailed;forhelefthisseattostandupinfront,sothat,hiscountenancebeingfullyrevealed,FranzhadnodifficultyinrecognizinghimasthemysteriousinhabitantofMonteCristo,andtheverysamepersonhehadencounteredtheprecedingeveningintheruinsoftheColosseum,andwhosevoiceandfigurehadseemedsofamiliartohim.Alldoubtofhisidentitywasnowatanend;hissingularhostevidentlyresidedatRome.ThesurpriseandagitationoccasionedbythisfullconfirmationofFranz’sformersuspicionhadnodoubtimpartedacorrespondingexpressiontohisfeatures;forthecountess,aftergazingwithapuzzledlookathisface,burstintoafitoflaughter,andbeggedtoknowwhathadhappened.
