The Lions’ Den.

           OnedivisionofLaForce,inwhichthemostdangerousanddesperateprisonersareconfined,iscalledthecourtofSaint–Bernard.Theprisoners,intheirexpressivelanguage,havenameditthe"Lions’Den,"probablybecausethecaptivespossessteethwhichfrequentlygnawthebars,andsometimesthekeepersalso.Itisaprisonwithinaprison;thewallsaredoublethethicknessoftherest.Thegratingsareeverydaycarefullyexaminedbyjailers,whoseherculeanproportionsandcoldpitilessexpressionprovethemtohavebeenchosentoreignovertheirsubjectsfortheirsuperioractivityandintelligence.Thecourt-yardofthisquarterisenclosedbyenormouswalls,overwhichthesunglancesobliquely,whenitdeignstopenetrateintothisgulfofmoralandphysicaldeformity.Onthispavedyardaretobeseenpacingtoandfrofrommorningtillnight,pale,careworn,andhaggard,likesomanyshadowsthemenwhomjusticeholdsbeneaththesteelsheissharpening.There,crouchedagainstthesideofthewallwhichattractsandretainsthemostheat,theymaybeseensometimestalkingtooneanother,butmorefrequentlyalone,watchingthedoor,whichsometimesopenstocallforthonefromthegloomyassemblage,ortothrowinanotheroutcastfromsociety.

           ThecourtofSaint–Bernardhasitsownparticularapartmentforthereceptionofguests;itisalongrectangle,dividedbytwouprightgratingsplacedatadistanceofthreefeetfromoneanothertopreventavisitorfromshakinghandswithorpassinganythingtotheprisoners.
