           DuringthedaytimeValentine’sperceptionsremainedtolerablyclear,owingtotheconstantpresenceofM.Noirtier,whocausedhimselftobecarriedtohisgranddaughter’sroom,andwatchedherwithhispaternaltenderness;Villefortalso,onhisreturnfromthelawcourts,frequentlypassedanhourortwowithhisfatherandchild.Atsixo’clockVillefortretiredtohisstudy,ateightM.d’Avrignyhimselfarrived,bringingthenightdraughtpreparedfortheyounggirl,andthenM.Noirtierwascarriedaway.Anurseofthedoctor’schoicesucceededthem,andneverlefttillabouttenoreleveno’clock,whenValentinewasasleep.Asshewentdown-stairsshegavethekeysofValentine’sroomtoM.deVillefort,sothatnoonecouldreachthesick-roomexceptingthroughthatofMadamedeVillefortandlittleEdward.
