           Itwasaboutsixo’clockintheevening;anopal-coloredlight,throughwhichanautumnalsunsheditsgoldenrays,descendedontheblueocean.Theheatofthedayhadgraduallydecreased,andalightbreezearose,seemingliketherespirationofnatureonawakeningfromtheburningsiestaofthesouth.AdeliciouszephyrplayedalongthecoastsoftheMediterranean,andwaftedfromshoretoshorethesweetperfumeofplants,mingledwiththefreshsmellofthesea.

           Alightyacht,chasteandelegantinitsform,wasglidingamidstthefirstdewsofnightovertheimmenselake,extendingfromGibraltartotheDardanelles,andfromTunistoVenice.Thevesselresembledaswanwithitswingsopenedtowardsthewind,glidingonthewater.Itadvancedswiftlyandgracefully,leavingbehinditaglitteringstretchoffoam.Bydegreesthesundisappearedbehindthewesternhorizon;butasthoughtoprovethetruthofthefancifulideasinheathenmythology,itsindiscreetraysreappearedonthesummitofeverywave,asifthegodoffirehadjustsunkuponthebosomofAmphitrite,whoinvainendeavoredtohideherloverbeneathherazuremantle.Theyachtmovedrapidlyon,thoughtheredidnotappeartobesufficientwindtorufflethecurlsontheheadofayounggirl.Standingontheprowwasatallman,ofadarkcomplexion,whosawwithdilatingeyesthattheywereapproachingadarkmassoflandintheshapeofacone,whichrosefromthemidstofthewaveslikethehatofaCatalan.
