The Abbe’s Chamber.

           Afterhavingpassedwithtolerableeasethroughthesubterraneanpassage,which,however,didnotadmitoftheirholdingthemselveserect,thetwofriendsreachedthefurtherendofthecorridor,intowhichtheabbe’scellopened;fromthatpointthepassagebecamemuchnarrower,andbarelypermittedonetocreepthroughonhandsandknees.Theflooroftheabbe’scellwaspaved,andithadbeenbyraisingoneofthestonesinthemostobscurecornerthatFariahadtobeenabletocommencethelaborioustaskofwhichDanteshadwitnessedthecompletion.

           Asheenteredthechamberofhisfriend,Dantescastaroundoneeagerandsearchingglanceinquestoftheexpectedmarvels,butnothingmorethancommonmethisview.

           "Itiswell,"saidtheabbe;"wehavesomehoursbeforeusitisnowjustaquarterpasttwelveo’clock."InstinctivelyDantesturnedroundtoobservebywhatwatchorclocktheabbehadbeenablesoaccuratelytospecifythehour.

           "Lookatthisrayoflightwhichentersbymywindow,"saidtheabbe,"andthenobservethelinestracedonthewall.Well,bymeansoftheselines,whichareinaccordancewiththedoublemotionoftheearth,andtheellipseitdescribesroundthesun,IamenabledtoascertaintheprecisehourwithmoreminutenessthanifIpossessedawatch;forthatmightbebrokenorderangedinitsmovements,whilethesunandearthnevervaryintheirappointedpaths.
