The Inquiry.

           M.deVillefortkeptthepromisehehadmadetoMadameDanglars,toendeavortofindouthowtheCountofMonteCristohaddiscoveredthehistoryofthehouseatAuteuil.HewrotethesamedayfortherequiredinformationtoM.deBoville,who,fromhavingbeenaninspectorofprisons,waspromotedtoahighofficeinthepolice;andthelatterbeggedfortwodaystimetoascertainexactlywhowouldbemostlikelytogivehimfullparticulars.AttheendoftheseconddayM.deVillefortreceivedthefollowingnote:—

           "ThepersoncalledtheCountofMonteCristoisanintimateacquaintanceofLordWilmore,arichforeigner,whoissometimesseeninParisandwhoisthereatthismoment;heisalsoknowntotheAbbeBusoni,aSicilianpriest,ofhighreputeintheEast,wherehehasdonemuchgood."

           M.deVillefortrepliedbyorderingthestrictestinquiriestobemaderespectingthesetwopersons;hisorderswereexecuted,andthefollowingeveninghereceivedthesedetails:—

           "Theabbe,whowasinParisonlyforamonth,inhabitedasmalltwo-storiedhousebehindSaint–Sulpice;thereweretworoomsoneachfloorandhewastheonlytenant.Thetwolowerroomsconsistedofadining-room,withatable,chairs,andside-boardofwalnutandawainscotedparlor,withoutornaments,carpet,ortimepiece.Itwasevidentthattheabbelimitedhimselftoobjectsofstrictnecessity.
