           Dantes,althoughstunnedandalmostsuffocated,hadsufficientpresenceofmindtoholdhisbreath,andashisrighthand(preparedashewasforeverychance)heldhisknifeopen,herapidlyrippedupthesack,extricatedhisarm,andthenhisbody;butinspiteofallhiseffortstofreehimselffromtheshot,hefeltitdragginghimdownstilllower.Hethenbenthisbody,andbyadesperateeffortseveredthecordthatboundhislegs,atthemomentwhenitseemedasifhewereactuallystrangled.Withamightyleapherosetothesurfaceofthesea,whiletheshotdraggeddowntothedepthsthesackthathadsonearlybecomehisshroud.

           Danteswaitedonlytogetbreath,andthendived,inordertoavoidbeingseen.Whenhearoseasecondtime,hewasfiftypacesfromwherehehadfirstsunk.Hesawoverheadablackandtempestuoussky,acrosswhichthewindwasdrivingcloudsthatoccasionallysufferedatwinklingstartoappear;beforehimwasthevastexpanseofwaters,sombreandterrible,whosewavesfoamedandroaredasifbeforetheapproachofastorm.Behindhim,blackerthanthesea,blackerthanthesky,rosephantom-likethevaststonestructure,whoseprojectingcragsseemedlikearmsextendedtoseizetheirprey,andonthehighestrockwasatorchlightingtwofigures.Hefanciedthatthesetwoformswerelookingatthesea;doubtlessthesestrangegrave-diggershadheardhiscry.Dantesdivedagain,andremainedalongtimebeneaththewater.
