           "Makeyourselfeasy,myfriend,"repliedtheabbe."Iamapriest,andconfessionsdieinmybreast.Recollect,ouronlydesireistocarryout,inafittingmanner,thelastwishesofourfriend.Speak,then,withoutreserve,aswithouthatred;tellthetruth,thewholetruth;Idonotknow,nevermayknow,thepersonsofwhomyouareabouttospeak;besides,IamanItalian,andnotaFrenchman,andbelongtoGod,andnottoman,andIshallshortlyretiretomyconvent,whichIhaveonlyquittedtofulfilthelastwishesofadyingman."ThispositiveassuranceseemedtogiveCaderoussealittlecourage.

           "Well,then,underthesecircumstances,"saidCaderousse,"Iwill,IevenbelieveIoughttoundeceiveyouastothefriendshipwhichpoorEdmondthoughtsosincereandunquestionable."

           "Beginwithhisfather,ifyouplease."saidtheabbe;"Edmondtalkedtomeagreatdealabouttheoldmanforwhomhehadthedeepestlove."

           "Thehistoryisasadone,sir,"saidCaderousse,shakinghishead;"perhapsyouknowalltheearlierpartofit?"

           "Yes.
