           Day,forwhichDanteshadsoeagerlyandimpatientlywaitedwithopeneyes,againdawned.WiththefirstlightDantesresumedhissearch.Againheclimbedtherockyheighthehadascendedthepreviousevening,andstrainedhisviewtocatcheverypeculiarityofthelandscape;butitworethesamewild,barrenaspectwhenseenbytheraysofthemorningsunwhichithaddonewhensurveyedbythefadingglimmerofeve.Descendingintothegrotto,heliftedthestone,filledhispocketswithgems,puttheboxtogetheraswellandsecurelyashecould,sprinkledfreshsandoverthespotfromwhichithadbeentaken,andthencarefullytroddowntheearthtogiveiteverywhereauniformappearance;then,quittingthegrotto,hereplacedthestone,heapingonitbrokenmassesofrocksandroughfragmentsofcrumblinggranite,fillingtheintersticeswithearth,intowhichhedeftlyinsertedrapidlygrowingplants,suchasthewildmyrtleandfloweringthorn,thencarefullywateringthesenewplantations,hescrupulouslyeffacedeverytraceoffootsteps,leavingtheapproachtothecavernassavage-lookinganduntroddenashehadfoundit.Thisdone,heimpatientlyawaitedthereturnofhiscompanions.TowaitatMonteCristoforthepurposeofwatchinglikeadragonoverthealmostincalculablerichesthathadthusfallenintohispossessionsatisfiednotthecravingsofhisheart,whichyearnedtoreturntodwellamongmankind,andtoassumetherank,power,andinfluencewhicharealwaysaccordedtowealththatfirstandgreatestofalltheforceswithinthegraspofman.
