Marseilles — The Arrival.

           Immediately,andaccordingtocustom,therampartsofFortSaint–Jeanwerecoveredwithspectators;itisalwaysaneventatMarseillesforashiptocomeintoport,especiallywhenthisship,likethePharaon,hasbeenbuilt,rigged,andladenattheoldPhoceedocks,andbelongstoanownerofthecity.

           Theshipdrewonandhadsafelypassedthestrait,whichsomevolcanicshockhasmadebetweentheCalasareigneandJarosislands;haddoubledPomegue,andapproachedtheharborundertopsails,jib,andspanker,butsoslowlyandsedatelythattheidlers,withthatinstinctwhichistheforerunnerofevil,askedoneanotherwhatmisfortunecouldhavehappenedonboard.However,thoseexperiencedinnavigationsawplainlythatifanyaccidenthadoccurred,itwasnottothevesselherself,forsheboredownwithalltheevidenceofbeingskilfullyhandled,theanchora-cockbill,thejib-boomguysalreadyeasedoff,andstandingbythesideofthepilot,whowassteeringthePharaontowardsthenarrowentranceoftheinnerport,wasayoungman,who,withactivityandvigilanteye,watchedeverymotionoftheship,andrepeatedeachdirectionofthepilot.
