The Third Attack.

           

           Thedoctoranalyzedthesymptomsofthemaladytowhichtheprisonerhadsuccumbed,anddeclaredthathewasdead.QuestionsandanswersfollowedinanonchalantmannerthatmadeDantesindignant,forhefeltthatalltheworldshouldhaveforthepoorabbealoveandrespectequaltohisown.

           "Iamverysorryforwhatyoutellme,"saidthegovernor,replyingtotheassuranceofthedoctor,"thattheoldmanisreallydead;forhewasaquiet,inoffensiveprisoner,happyinhisfolly,andrequirednowatching."

           "Ah,"addedtheturnkey,"therewasnooccasionforwatchinghim:hewouldhavestayedherefiftyyears,I’llanswerforit,withoutanyattempttoescape."

           "Still,"saidthegovernor,"Ibelieveitwillberequisite,notwithstandingyourcertainty,andnotthatIdoubtyourscience,butindischargeofmyofficialduty,thatweshouldbeperfectlyassuredthattheprisonerisdead."Therewasamomentofcompletesilence,duringwhichDantes,stilllistening,knewthatthedoctorwasexaminingthecorpseasecondtime.

           "Youmaymakeyourmindeasy,"saidthedoctor;"heisdead.Iwillanswerforthat."

           "Youknow,sir,"saidthegovernor,persisting,"thatwearenotcontentinsuchcasesasthiswithsuchasimpleexamination.Inspiteofallappearances,besokind,therefore,astofinishyourdutybyfulfillingtheformalitiesdescribedbylaw."

           "Lettheironsbeheated,"saidthedoctor;"butreallyitisauselessprecaution.
