           "Come,"saidhetotheabbe,"Iamanxioustoseeyourtreasures."

           Theabbesmiled,and,proceedingtothedisusedfireplace,raised,bythehelpofhischisel,alongstone,whichhaddoubtlessbeenthehearth,beneathwhichwasacavityofconsiderabledepth,servingasasafedepositoryofthearticlesmentionedtoDantes.

           "Whatdoyouwishtoseefirst?"askedtheabbe.

           "Oh,yourgreatworkonthemonarchyofItaly!"

           Fariathendrewforthfromhishiding-placethreeorfourrollsoflinen,laidoneovertheother,likefoldsofpapyrus.Theserollsconsistedofslipsofclothaboutfourincheswideandeighteenlong;theywereallcarefullynumberedandcloselycoveredwithwriting,solegiblethatDantescouldeasilyreadit,aswellasmakeoutthesenseitbeinginItalian,alanguagehe,asaProvencal,perfectlyunderstood.
