Theycamedowntothemouthofthecave,wherealightshoneoutfromtheedgeofablanketthathungovertheopening.ThetwopackswereatthefootofthetreecoveredwithacanvasandRobertJordankneltdownandfeltthecanvaswetandstiffoverthem.Inthedarkhefeltunderthecanvasintheoutsidepocketofoneofthepacksandtookoutaleather-coveredflaskandslippeditinhispocket.Unlockingthelongbarredpadlocksthatpassedthroughthegrommetthatclosedtheopeningofthemouthofthepacks,anduntyingthedrawstringatthetopofeachpack,hefeltinsidethemandverifiedtheircontentswithhishands.Deepinonepackhefeltthebundledblocksinthesacks,thesackswrappedinthesleepingrobe,andtyingthestringsofthatandpushingthelockshutagain,heputhishandsintotheotherandfeltthesharpwoodoutlineoftheboxoftheoldexploder,thecigarboxwiththecaps,eachlittlecylinderwrappedroundandroundwithitstwowires(thelotofthempackedascarefullyashehadpackedhiscollectionofwildbirdeggswhenhewasaboy),thestockofthesubmachinegun,disconnectedfromthebarrelandwrappedinhisleatherjacket,thetwopansandfiveclipsinoneoftheinnerpocketsofthebigpack-sackandthesmallcoilsofcopperwireandthebigcoiloflightinsulatedwireintheother.Inthepocketwiththewirehefelthispliersandthetwowoodenawlsformakingholesintheendoftheblocksandthen,fromthelastinsidepocket,hetookabigboxoftheRussiancigarettesofthelothehadfromGolz’sheadquartersandtyingthemouthofthepackshut,hepushedthelockin,buckledtheflapsdownandagaincoveredbothpackswiththecanvas.Anselmohadgoneonintothecave.
