           Hehadsuffered,andhehadlearnedtothink:twoadvantagesthathehadneverknownbefore;andtheself-reproacharisingfromthedeplorableeventinWimpoleStreet,towhichhefelthimselfaccessorybyallthedangerousintimacyofhisunjustifiabletheatre,madeanimpressiononhismindwhich,attheageofsix-and-twenty,withnowantofsenseorgoodcompanions,wasdurableinitshappyeffects.Hebecamewhatheoughttobe:usefultohisfather,steadyandquiet,andnotlivingmerelyforhimself.

           Herewascomfortindeed!andquiteassoonasSirThomascouldplacedependenceonsuchsourcesofgood,Edmundwascontributingtohisfather’seasebyimprovementintheonlypointinwhichhehadgivenhimpainbefore—improvementinhisspirits.AfterwanderingaboutandsittingundertreeswithFannyallthesummerevenings,hehadsowelltalkedhismindintosubmissionastobeverytolerablycheerfulagain.

           ThesewerethecircumstancesandthehopeswhichgraduallybroughttheiralleviationtoSirThomas,deadeninghissenseofwhatwaslost,andinpartreconcilinghimtohimself;thoughtheanguisharisingfromtheconvictionofhisownerrorsintheeducationofhisdaughterswasnevertobeentirelydoneaway.

           ToolatehebecameawarehowunfavourabletothecharacterofanyyoungpeoplemustbethetotallyoppositetreatmentwhichMariaandJuliahadbeenalwaysexperiencingathome,wheretheexcessiveindulgenceandflatteryoftheiraunthadbeencontinuallycontrastedwithhisownseverity.Hesawhowillhehadjudged,inexpectingtocounteractwhatwaswronginMrs.
