ThiswasagreatdealbetterthantohavetotakeupthepentoacquaintherwithalltheparticularsoftheGrants’intendedjourney,forthepresentintelligencewasofanaturetopromiseoccupationforthepenformanydaystocome,beingnolessthanthedangerousillnessofhereldestson,ofwhichtheyhadreceivednoticebyexpressafewhoursbefore.
TomhadgonefromLondonwithapartyofyoungmentoNewmarket,whereaneglectedfallandagooddealofdrinkinghadbroughtonafever;andwhenthepartybrokeup,beingunabletomove,hadbeenleftbyhimselfatthehouseofoneoftheseyoungmentothecomfortsofsicknessandsolitude,andtheattendanceonlyofservants.Insteadofbeingsoonwellenoughtofollowhisfriends,ashehadthenhoped,hisdisorderincreasedconsiderably,anditwasnotlongbeforehethoughtsoillofhimselfastobeasreadyashisphysiciantohavealetterdespatchedtoMansfield.
“Thisdistressingintelligence,asyoumaysuppose,”observedherladyship,aftergivingthesubstanceofit,“hasagitatedusexceedingly,andwecannotpreventourselvesfrombeinggreatlyalarmedandapprehensiveforthepoorinvalid,whosestateSirThomasfearsmaybeverycritical;andEdmundkindlyproposesattendinghisbrotherimmediately,butIamhappytoaddthatSirThomaswillnotleavemeonthisdistressingoccasion,asitwouldbetootryingforme.
