           Hervexationdidnotendwiththeweek.Allthiswasbad,butshehadstillmoretofeelwhenFridaycameroundagainandbroughtnoEdmund;whenSaturdaycameandstillnoEdmund;andwhen,throughtheslightcommunicationwiththeotherfamilywhichSundayproduced,shelearnedthathehadactuallywrittenhometodeferhisreturn,havingpromisedtoremainsomedayslongerwithhisfriend.

           Ifshehadfeltimpatienceandregretbefore—ifshehadbeensorryforwhatshesaid,andfeareditstoostrongeffectonhim—shenowfeltandfeareditalltenfoldmore.Shehad,moreover,tocontendwithonedisagreeableemotionentirelynewtoher—jealousy.HisfriendMr.Owenhadsisters;hemightfindthemattractive.But,atanyrate,hisstayingawayatatimewhen,accordingtoallprecedingplans,shewastoremovetoLondon,meantsomethingthatshecouldnotbear.HadHenryreturned,ashetalkedofdoing,attheendofthreeorfourdays,sheshouldnowhavebeenleavingMansfield.ItbecameabsolutelynecessaryforhertogettoFannyandtrytolearnsomethingmore.Shecouldnotliveanylongerinsuchsolitarywretchedness;andshemadeherwaytothePark,throughdifficultiesofwalkingwhichshehaddeemedunconquerableaweekbefore,forthechanceofhearingalittleinaddition,forthesakeofatleasthearinghisname.

           Thefirsthalf-hourwaslost,forFannyandLadyBertramweretogether,andunlessshehadFannytoherselfshecouldhopefornothing.
