           Edmundwasatthistimeparticularlyfullofcares:hismindbeingdeeplyoccupiedintheconsiderationoftwoimportanteventsnowathand,whichweretofixhisfateinlife—ordinationandmatrimony—eventsofsuchaseriouscharacterastomaketheball,whichwouldbeveryquicklyfollowedbyoneofthem,appearoflessmomentinhiseyesthaninthoseofanyotherpersoninthehouse.Onthe23rdhewasgoingtoafriendnearPeterborough,inthesamesituationashimself,andtheyweretoreceiveordinationinthecourseoftheChristmasweek.Halfhisdestinywouldthenbedetermined,buttheotherhalfmightnotbesoverysmoothlywooed.Hisdutieswouldbeestablished,butthewifewhowastoshare,andanimate,andrewardthoseduties,mightyetbeunattainable.Heknewhisownmind,buthewasnotalwaysperfectlyassuredofknowingMissCrawford’s.Therewerepointsonwhichtheydidnotquiteagree;thereweremomentsinwhichshedidnotseempropitious;andthoughtrustingaltogethertoheraffection,sofarastoberesolved—almostresolved—onbringingittoadecisionwithinaveryshorttime,assoonasthevarietyofbusinessbeforehimwerearranged,andheknewwhathehadtoofferher,hehadmanyanxiousfeelings,manydoubtinghoursastotheresult.Hisconvictionofherregardforhimwassometimesverystrong;hecouldlookbackonalongcourseofencouragement,andshewasasperfectindisinterestedattachmentasineverythingelse.
