           Thescene-painterwasgone,havingspoiltonlythefloorofoneroom,ruinedallthecoachman’ssponges,andmadefiveoftheunder-servantsidleanddissatisfied;andSirThomaswasinhopesthatanotherdayortwowouldsufficetowipeawayeveryoutwardmementoofwhathadbeen,eventothedestructionofeveryunboundcopyofLovers’Vowsinthehouse,forhewasburningallthatmethiseye.

           Mr.YateswasbeginningnowtounderstandSirThomas’sintentions,thoughasfaraseverfromunderstandingtheirsource.Heandhisfriendhadbeenoutwiththeirgunsthechiefofthemorning,andTomhadtakentheopportunityofexplaining,withproperapologiesforhisfather’sparticularity,whatwastobeexpected.Mr.Yatesfeltitasacutelyasmightbesupposed.Tobeasecondtimedisappointedinthesamewaywasaninstanceofverysevereill-luck;andhisindignationwassuch,thathaditnotbeenfordelicacytowardshisfriend,andhisfriend’syoungestsister,hebelievedheshouldcertainlyattackthebaronetontheabsurdityofhisproceedings,andarguehimintoalittlemorerationality.HebelievedthisverystoutlywhilehewasinMansfieldWood,andallthewayhome;buttherewasasomethinginSirThomas,whentheysatroundthesametable,whichmadeMr.Yatesthinkitwisertolethimpursuehisownway,andfeelthefollyofitwithoutopposition.Hehadknownmanydisagreeablefathersbefore,andoftenbeenstruckwiththeinconveniencestheyoccasioned,butnever,inthewholecourseofhislife,hadheseenoneofthatclasssounintelligiblymoral,soinfamouslytyrannicalasSirThomas.
