           Forthepresentthedangerwasover,andFanny’ssickfeelingssubsided;butwhenteawassoonafterwardsbroughtin,andSirThomas,gettingup,saidthathefoundthathecouldnotbeanylongerinthehousewithoutjustlookingintohisowndearroom,everyagitationwasreturning.Hewasgonebeforeanythinghadbeensaidtopreparehimforthechangehemustfindthere;andapauseofalarmfollowedhisdisappearance.Edmundwasthefirsttospeak—

           “Somethingmustbedone,”saidhe.

           “Itistimetothinkofourvisitors,”saidMaria,stillfeelingherhandpressedtoHenryCrawford’sheart,andcaringlittleforanythingelse.“WheredidyouleaveMissCrawford,Fanny?”

           Fannytoldoftheirdeparture,anddeliveredtheirmessage.

           “ThenpoorYatesisallalone,”criedTom.“Iwillgoandfetchhim.Hewillbenobadassistantwhenitallcomesout.”

           Tothetheatrehewent,andreacheditjustintimetowitnessthefirstmeetingofhisfatherandhisfriend.SirThomashadbeenagooddealsurprisedtofindcandlesburninginhisroom;andoncastinghiseyeroundit,toseeothersymptomsofrecenthabitationandageneralairofconfusioninthefurniture.Theremovalofthebookcasefrombeforethebilliard-roomdoorstruckhimespecially,buthehadscarcelymorethantimetofeelastonishedatallthis,beforethereweresoundsfromthebilliard-roomtoastonishhimstillfarther.Someonewastalkingthereinaveryloudaccent;hedidnotknowthevoice—morethantalking—almosthallooing.
