           SirThomasBertramhadinterest,which,fromprincipleaswellaspride—fromageneralwishofdoingright,andadesireofseeingallthatwereconnectedwithhiminsituationsofrespectability,hewouldhavebeengladtoexertfortheadvantageofLadyBertram’ssister;butherhusband’sprofessionwassuchasnointerestcouldreach;andbeforehehadtimetodeviseanyothermethodofassistingthem,anabsolutebreachbetweenthesistershadtakenplace.Itwasthenaturalresultoftheconductofeachparty,andsuchasaveryimprudentmarriagealmostalwaysproduces.Tosaveherselffromuselessremonstrance,Mrs.Priceneverwrotetoherfamilyonthesubjecttillactuallymarried.LadyBertram,whowasawomanofverytranquilfeelings,andatemperremarkablyeasyandindolent,wouldhavecontentedherselfwithmerelygivinguphersister,andthinkingnomoreofthematter;butMrs.Norrishadaspiritofactivity,whichcouldnotbesatisfiedtillshehadwrittenalongandangrylettertoFanny,topointoutthefollyofherconduct,andthreatenherwithallitspossibleillconsequences.Mrs.Price,inherturn,wasinjuredandangry;andananswer,whichcomprehendedeachsisterinitsbitterness,andbestowedsuchverydisrespectfulreflectionsontheprideofSirThomasasMrs.Norriscouldnotpossiblykeeptoherself,putanendtoallintercoursebetweenthemforaconsiderableperiod.
