ButMorgothhatedthenewlights,andwasforawhileconfoundedbythisunlooked-forstrokeoftheValar.
ThenheassailedTilion,sendingspiritsofshadowagainsthim,andtherewasstrifeinIlmenbeneaththepathsofthestars;butTilionwasvictorious.AndArienMorgothfearedwithagreatfear,butdarednotcomenighher,havingindeednolongerthepower;forashegrewinmalice,andsentforthfromhimselftheevilthatheconceivedinliesandcreaturesofwickedness,hismightpassedintothemandwasdispersed,andhehimselfbecameevermoreboundtotheearth,unwillingtoissuefromhisdarkstrongholds.WithshadowshehidhimselfandhisservantsfromArien,theglanceofwhoseeyestheycouldnotlongendure;andthelandsnearhisdwellingwereshroudedinfumesandgreatclouds.
ButseeingtheassaultuponTiliontheValarwereindoubt,fearingwhatthemaliceandcunningofMorgothmightyetcontriveagainstthem.BeingunwillingtomakewaruponhiminMiddle-earth,theyrememberednonethelesstheruinofAlmaren;andtheyresolvedthatthelikeshouldnotbefallValinor.Thereforeatthattimetheyfortifiedtheirlandanew,andtheyraisedupthemountain-wallsofthePeloritosheeranddreadfulheights,east,north,andsouth.
Theiroutersidesweredarkandsmooth,withoutfootholdorledge,andtheyfellingreatprecipiceswithfaceshardasglass,androseuptotowerswithcrownsofwhiteice.
