AfteratimeagreatconcoursegatheredabouttheRingofDoom;andtheValarsatinshadow,foritwasnight.ButthestarsofVardanowglimmeredoverhead,andtheairwasclear;forthewindsofManwehasdrivenawaythevapoursofdeathandrolledbacktheshadowsofthesea.ThenYavannaaroseandstooduponEzellohar,theGreenMound,butitwasbarenowandblack;andshelaidherhandsupontheTrees,buttheyweredeadanddark,andeachbranchthatshetouchedbrokeandfelllifelessatherfeet.Thenmanyvoiceswereliftedinlamentation;anditseemedtothosethatmournedthattheyhaddrainedtothedregsthecupofwoethatMelkorhadfilledforthem.Butitwasnotso.
YavannaspokebeforetheValar,saying:"TheLightoftheTreeshaspassedaway,andlivesnowonlyintheSilmarilsofFeanor.Foresightedwashe!EvenforthosewhoaremightiestunderIluvatarthereissomeworkthattheymayaccomplishonce,andonceonly.TheLightoftheTreesIbroughtintobeing,andwithinEaIcandosoneveragain.YethadIbutalittleofthatlightIcouldrecalllifetotheTrees,eretheirrootsdecay;andthenourhurtshouldbehealed,andthemaliceofMelkorbeconfounded.’
ThenManwespokeandsaid:’Hearestthou,FeanorsonofFinwe,thewordsofYavanna?Wiltthougrantwhatshewouldask?’
Therewaslongsilence,butFeanoranswerednoword.ThenTulkascried:’Speak,ONoldo,yeaornay!ButwhoshalldenyYavanna?AnddidnotthelightoftheSilmarilscomefromherworkinthebeginning?’
