IntimethehostsoftheVanyarandtheNoldorcametothelastwesternshoresoftheHitherLands.Inthenorththeseshores,intheancientdaysaftertheBattleofthePowers,benteverwestward,untilinthenorthernmostpartsofArdaonlyanarrowseadividedAman,uponwhichValinorwasbuilt,fromtheHitherLands;butthisnarrowseawasfilledwithgrindingice,becauseoftheviolenceofthefrostsofMelkor.ThereforeOromedidnotleadthehostsoftheEldalieintothefarnorth,butbroughtthemtothefairlandsabouttheRiverSirion,thatafterwardswerenamedBeleriand;andfromthoseshoreswhencefirsttheEldarlookedinfearandwonderontheSeatherestretchedanocean,wideanddarkanddeep,betweenthemandtheMountainsofAman.
NowUlmo,bythecounseloftheValar,cametotheshoresofMiddle-earthandspokewiththeEldarwhowaitedthere,gazingonthedarkwaves;andbecauseofhiswordsandthemusicwhichhemadeforthemonhishornsofshelltheirfearoftheseawasturnedrathertodesire.ThereforeUlmouprootedanislandwhichlonghadstoodaloneamidthesea,farfromeithershore,sincethetumultsofthefallofIlluin;andwiththeaidofhisservantshemovedit,asitwereamightyship,andanchoreditintheBayofBalar,intowhichSirionpouredhiswater.ThentheVanyarandtheNoldorembarkeduponthatisle,andweredrawnoverthesea,andcameatlasttothelongshoresbeneaththeMountainsofAman;andtheyenteredValinorandwerewelcomedtoitsbliss.Buttheeasternhornoftheisland,whichwasdeep-groundedintheshoalsoffthemouthsofSirion,wasbrokenasunderandremainedbehindandthat,itissaid,wastheIsleofBalar,towhichafterwardsOsseoftencame.
