BrightEarendilwasthenlordofthepeoplethatdweltnightoSirion’smouths;andhetooktowifeElwingthefair,andsheboretohimElrondandElros,whoarecalledtheHalf-elven.YetEarendilcouldnotrest,andhisvoyagesabouttheshoresoftheHitherLandseasednothisunquiet.Twopurposesgrewinhisheart,blendedasoneinlongingforthewideSea:hesoughttosailthereon,seekingafterTuorandIdrilwhoreturnednot;andhethoughttofindperhapsthelastshore,andbringerehediedthemessageofElvesandMentotheValarintheWest,thatshouldmovetheirheartstopityforthesorrowsofMiddle-earth.
NowEarendilbecamefastinfriendshipwithCirdantheShipwright,whodweltontheIsleofBalarwiththoseofhispeoplewhoescapedfromthesackoftheHavensofBrithombarandEglarest.WiththeaidofCirdanEarendilbuiltVingilot,theFoam-flower,fairestoftheshipsofsong;goldenwereitsoarsandwhiteitstimbers,hewninthebirchwoodsofNimbrethil,anditssailswereastheargentmoon.IntheLayofEarendilismanyathingsungofhisadventuresinthedeepandinlandsuntrodden,andinmanyseasandinmanyisles;butElwingwasnotwithhim,andshesatinsorrowbythemouthsofSirion.
EarendilfoundnotTuornorIdril,norcameheeveronthatjourneytotheshoresofValinor,defeatedbyshadowsandenchantment,drivenbyrepellingwinds,untilinlongingforElwingheturnedhomewardtowardsthecoastofBeleriand.
