IthasbeentoldthatFeanorandhissonscamefirstoftheExilestoMiddle-earth,andlandedinthewasteofLammoth,theGreatEcho,upontheoutershoresoftheFirthofDrengistAndevenastheNoldorsetfootuponthestrandtheircriesweretakenupintothehillsandmultiplied,sothataclamourasofcountlessmightyvoicesfilledallthecoastsoftheNorth;andthenoiseoftheburningoftheshipsatLosgarwentdownthewindsoftheseaasatumultofgreatwrath,andfarawayallwhoheardthatsoundwerefilledwithwonder.
NowtheflamesofthatburningwereseennotonlybyFingolfin,whomFeanorhaddesertedinAraman,butalsobytheOrcsandthewatchersofMorgoth.NotalehastoldwhatMorgoththoughtinhisheartatthetidingsthatFeanor,hisbitterestfoe,hadbroughtahostoutoftheWest.Itmaybethathefearedhimlittle,forhehadasyetnoproofoftheswordsoftheNoldor;andsoonitwasseenthathepurposedtodrivethembackintothesea.
UnderthecoldstarsbeforetherisingoftheMoonthehostofFeanorwentupthelongFirthofDrengistthatpiercedtheEchoingHillsofEredLomin,andpassedthusfromtheshoresintothegreatlandofHithlum;andtheycameatlengthtothelonglakeofMithrim,anduponitsnorthernshoremadetheirencampmentintheregionthatborethesamename.
