Inavalleyamongthefoothillsofthemountains,belowthespringsofThalos,hesawlightsintheevening,andfaroffheheardthesoundofsong.Atthishewonderedmuch,fortheGreen-elvesofthatlandlitnofires,nordidtheysingbynightAtfirsthefearedthataraidofOrcshadpassedtheleagueroftheNorth,butashedrewnearheperceivedthatitwasnotso;forthesingersusedatonguethathehadnotheardbefore,neitherthatofDwarvesnorofOrcs.ThenFelagund,standingsilenthithenight-shadowofthetrees,lookeddownintothecamp,andtherehebeheldastrangepeople.
NowthesewereapartofthekindredandfollowingofBeortheOld,ashewasafterwardscalled,achieftainamongMen.AftermanylivesofwanderingoutoftheEasthehadledthematlastovertheBlueMountains,thefirstoftheraceofMentoenterBeleriand;andtheysangbecausetheywereglad,andbelievedthattheyhadescapedfromallperilsandhadcomeatlasttoalandwithoutfear.
