Asleeplesswatchwassetuponthem,andnopassledthroughthem,saveonlyattheCalacirya:butthatpasstheValardidnotclose,becauseoftheEldarthatwerefaithful,andinthecityofTirionuponthegreenhillFinarfinyetruledtheremnantoftheNoldorinthedeepcleftofthemountains.Forallthoseofelven-race,eventheVanyarandIngwetheirlord,mustbreatheattimestheouterairandthewindthatcomesovertheseafromthelandsoftheirbirth;andtheValarwouldnotsundertheTeleriwhollyfromtheirkin.ButintheCalaciryatheysetstrongtowersandmanysentinels,andatitsissueupontheplainsofValmarahostwasencamped,sothatneitherbirdnorbeastnorelfnorman,noranycreaturebesidethatdweltinMiddle-earth,couldpassthatleaguer.
Andinthattimealso,whichsongscallNurtaleValinoreva,theHidingofValinor,theEnchantedIsleswereset,andailtheseasaboutthemwerefilledwithshadowsandbewilderment.AndtheseisleswerestrungasanetintheShadowySeasfromthenorthtothesouth,beforeTolEressea,theLonelyIsle,isreachedbyonesailingwest.Hardlymightanyvesselpassbetweenthem,forinthedangeroussoundsthewavessighedforeverupondarkrocksshroudedinmist.Andinthetwilightagreatwearinesscameuponmarinersandaloathingofthesea;butallthateversetfootupontheislandswerethereentrapped,andsleptuntiltheChangeoftheWorld.ThusitwasthatasMandosforetoldtotheminAramantheBlessedRealmwasshutagainsttheNoldor;andofthemanymessengersthatinafterdayssailedintotheWestnonecameevertoValinor-saveoneonly:themightiestmarinerofsong.
