NowtheOrcsthatmultipliedinthedarknessoftheearthgrewstrongandfell,andtheirdarklordfilledthemwithalustofrainanddeath;andtheyissuedfromAngband’sgatesunderthecloudsthatMorgothsentforth,andpassedsilentlyintothehighlandsofthenorth.ThenceonasuddenagreatarmycameintoBeleriandandassailedKingThingol.NowinhiswiderealmmanyElveswanderedfreeinthewild,ordweltatpeaceinsmallkindredsfarsundered;andonlyaboutMenegrothinthemidstoftheland,andalongtheFalasinthecountryofthemariners,weretherenumerouspeoples.ButtheOrcscamedownuponeithersideofMenegroth,andfromcampsintheeastbetweenCelonandGelion,andwestintheplainsbetweenSirionandNarog,theyplunderedfarandwide;andThingolwascutonfromCirdanatEglarest.ThereforehecalleduponDenethor;andtheElvescameinforcefromRegionbeyondArosandfromOssiriand,andfoughtthefirstbattleintheWarsofBeleriand.AndtheeasternhostoftheOrcswastakenbetweenthearmiesoftheEldar,northoftheAndramandmidwaybetweenArosandGelion,andtheretheywereutterlydefeated,andthosethatflednorthfromthegreatslaughterwerewaylaidbytheaxesoftheNaugrimthatissuedfromMountDolmed:fewindeedreturnedtoAngband.
ButthevictoryoftheElveswasdear-boughtForthoseofOssiriandwerelight-armed,andnomatchfortheOrcs,whowereshodwithironandiron-shieldedandboregreatspearswithbroadblades;andDenethorwascutoffandsurroundeduponthehillofAmonEreb.
