AndwhenThingolcameagaintoMenegrothhelearnedthattheOrc-hostinthewestwasvictorious,andhaddrivenCirdantotherimofthesea.ThereforehewithdrewallhispeoplethathissummonscouldreachwithinthefastnessofNeldorethandRegion,andMelianputforthherpowerandfencedallthatdominionroundaboutwithanunseenwailofshadowandbewilderment:theGirdleofMelian,thatnonethereaftercouldpassagainstherwillorthewillofKingThingol,unlessoneshouldcomewithapowergreaterthanthatofMeliantheMaia.Andthisinnerland,whichwaslongnamedEglador,wasaftercalledDoriath,theguardedkingdom,LandoftheGirdle.Withinittherewasyetawatchfulpeace;butwithouttherewasperilandgreatfear,andtheservantsofMorgothroamedatwill,saveinthewalledhavensoftheFalas.
Butnewtidingswereathand,whichnoneinMiddle-earthhadforeseen,neitherMorgothinhispitsnorMelianinMenegroth;fornonewscameoutofAmanwhetherbymessenger,orbyspirit,orbyvisionindream,afterthedeathoftheTrees.
