InBeleriandKingThingoluponhisthronewasasthelordsoftheMaiar,whosepowerisatrest,whosejoyisasanairthattheybreatheinalltheirdays,whosethoughtflowsinatideuntroubledfromtheheightstothedeeps.InBeleriandstillattimesrodeOromethegreat,passinglikeawindoverthemountains,andthesoundofhishorncamedowntheleaguesofthestarlight,andtheElvesfearedhimforthesplendourofhiscountenanceandthegreatnoiseoftheonrushofNahar;butwhentheValaromaechoedinthehills,theyknewwellthatallevilthingswerefledfaraway.
Butitcametopassatlastthattheendofblisswasathand,andthenoontideofValinorwasdrawingtoitstwilight.Forashasbeentoldandasisknowntoall,beingwritteninloreandsunginmanysongs,MelkorslewtheTreesoftheValarwiththeaidofUngoliant,andescaped,andcamebacktoMiddle-earth.FartothenorthbefellthestrifeofMorgothandUngoliant;butthegreatcryofMorgothechoedthroughBeleriand,andallitspeopleshrankforfear;forthoughtheyknewnotwhatitforeboded,theyheardthentheheraldofdeath.SoonafterwardsUngoliantfledfromthenorthandcameintotherealmofKingThingol,andaterrorofdarknesswasabouther;butbythepowerofMelianshewasstayed,andenterednotintoNeldoreth,butabodelongtimeundertheshadowoftheprecipicesinwhichDorthonionfellsouthward.AndtheybecameknownasEredGorgoroth,theMountainsofTerror,andnonedaredgothither,orpassnighthem;therelifeandlightwerestrangled,andthereallwaterswerepoisoned.
