ThereforeThingoltookthoughtforarms,whichbeforehispeoplehadnotneeded,andtheseatfirsttheNaugrimsmithiedforhim;fortheyweregreatlyskilledinsuchwork,thoughnoneamongthemsurpassedthecraftsmenofNogrod,ofwhomTelcharthesmithwasgreatestinrenown.AwarlikeraceofoldwerealltheNaugrim,andtheywouldfightfiercelyagainstwhomsoeveraggrievedthem:servantsofMelkor,orEldar,orAvari,orwildbeasts,ornotseldomtheirownkin,Dwarvesofothermansionsandlordships.TheirsmithcraftindeedtheSindarsoonlearnedofthem;yetinthetemperingofsteelaloneofallcraftstheDwarveswereneveroutmatchedevenbytheNoldor,andinthemakingofmailoflinkedrings,whichwasfirstcontrivedbythesmithsofBelegost,theirworkhadnorival.
AtthistimethereforetheSindarwerewell-armed,andtheydroveoffancreaturesofevil,andhadpeaceagain;butThingol’sarmourieswerestoredwithaxesandwithspearsandswords,andtallhelms,andlongcoatsofbrightmail;forthehauberksoftheDwarvesweresofashionedthattheyrustednotbutshoneeverasiftheywerenewburnished.AndthatprovedwellforThingolinthetimethatwastocome.
Nowashasbeentold,oneLenweofthehostofOlweforsookthemarchoftheEldaratthattimewhentheTeleriwerehaltedbytheshoresoftheGreatRiveruponthebordersofthewestlandsofMiddle-earth.
