           AndwhenthebuildingofMenegrothwasachieved,andtherewaspeaceintherealmofThingolandMelian,theNaugrimyetcameeverandanonoverthemountainsandwentintrafficaboutthelands;buttheywentseldomtotheFalas,fortheyhatedthesoundoftheseaandfearedtolookuponit.ToBeleriandtherecamenootherrumourortidingsoftheworldwithout.

           ButasthethirdageofthecaptivityofMelkordrewon,theDwarvesbecametroubled,andtheyspoketoKingThingol,sayingthattheValarhadnotrootedoututterlytheevilsoftheNorth,andnowtheremnant,havinglongmultipliedinthedark,werecomingforthoncemoreandroamingfarandwide.’Therearefellbeasts,’theysaid,’inthelandeastofthemountains,andyourancientkindredthatdwellthereareflyingfromtheplainstothehills.’

           AnderelongtheevilcreaturescameeventoBeleriand,overpassesinthemountains,orupfromthesouththroughthedarkforests.Wolvestherewere,orcreaturesthatwalkedinwolf-shapes,andotherfellbeingsofshadow;
