NowMelianhadmuchforesight,afterthemanneroftheMaiar;andwhenthesecondageofthecaptivityofMelkorhadpassed,shecounselledThingolthatthePeaceofArdawouldnotlastforever.Hetookthoughtthereforehowheshouldmakeforhimselfakinglydwelling,andaplacethatshouldbestrong,ifevilweretoawakeagaininMiddle-earth;andhesoughtaidandcounseloftheDwarvesofBelegostTheygaveitwillingly,fortheywereunweariedinthosedaysandeagerfornewworks;andthoughtheDwarveseverdemandedapriceforallthattheydid,whetherwithdelightorwithtoil,atthistimetheyheldthemselvespaid.ForMeliantaughtthemmuchthattheywereeagertolearn,andThingolrewardedthemwithmanyfairpearls.TheseCirdangavetohim,fortheyweregotingreatnumberintheshallowwatersabouttheIsleofBalar;buttheNaugrimhadnotbeforeseentheirlike,andtheyheldthemdear.Onetherewasasgreatasadove’segg,anditssheenwasasstarlightonthefoamofthesea;Nimphelositwasnamed,andthechieftainoftheDwarvesofBelegostprizeditaboveamountainofwealth.
ThereforetheNaugrimlabouredlongandgladlyforThingol,anddevisedforhimmansionsafterthefashionoftheirpeople,delveddeepintheearth.WheretheEsgalduinfloweddown,andpartedNeldorethfromRegion,thereroseinthemidstoftheforestarockyhill,andtheriverranatitsfeet.TheretheymadethegatesofthehallofThingol,andtheybuiltabridgeofstoneovertheriver,bywhichalonethegatescouldbeentered.Beyondthegateswidepassagesrandowntohighhallsandchambersfarbelowthatwerehewninthelivingstone,somanyandsogreatthatthatdwellingwasnamedMenegroth,theThousandCaves.
ButtheElvesalsohadpartinthatlabour,andElvesandDwarvestogether,eachwiththeirownskill,therewroughtoutthevisionsofMelian,imagesofthewonderandbeautyofValinorbeyondtheSea.
