ButFeanor,knowingallthatwassaid,tookcounselwithhissons;andtwocoursesonlytheysawtoescapefromAramanandcomeintoEndor:bythestraitsorbyship.ButtheHelcaraxetheydeemedimpassable,whereastheshipsweretoofew.Manyhadbeenlostupontheirlongjourney,andthereremainednownotenoughtobearacrossallthegreathosttogether;yetnonewerewillingtoabideuponthewesterncoastwhileotherswereferriedfirst:alreadythefearoftreacherywasawakeamongtheNoldor.ThereforeitcameintotheheartsofFeanorandhissonstoseizealltheshipsanddepartsuddenly;fortheyhadretainedthemasteryofthefleetsincethebattleoftheHaven,anditwasmannedonlybythosewhohadfoughtthereandwereboundtoFeanor.Andasthoughitcameathiscall,theresprangupawindfromthenorth-west,andFeanorslippedawaysecretlywithallwhomhedeemedtruetohim,andwentaboard,andputouttosea,andleftFingolfininAraman.Andsincetheseawastherenarrow,steeringeastandsomewhatsouthhepassedoverwithoutloss,andfirstofalltheNoldorsetfootoncemoreupontheshoresofMiddle-earth;andthelandingofFeanorwasatthemouthofthefirthwhichwascalledDrengistandranintoDorlomin.
Butwhentheywerelanded,Maedhrostheeldestofhissons,andonatimethefriendofFingonereMorgoth’sliescamebetween,spoketoFeanor,saying:’Nowwhatshipsandrowerswillyousparetoreturn,andwhomshalltheybearhitherfirst?Fingonthevaliant?’
ThenFeanorlaughedasonefey,andhecried:’Noneandnone!WhatIhaveleftbehindIcountnownoloss;needlessbaggageontheroadithasproved.Letthosethatcursedmyname,cursemestill,andwhinetheirwaybacktothecagesoftheValar!Lettheshipsburn!’ThenMaedhrosalonestoodaside,butFeanorcausedfiretobesettothewhiteshipsoftheTeleri.
