ButinthathourFinarfinforsookthemarch,andturnedback,beingfilledwithgrief,andwithbitternessagainsttheHouseofFeanor,becauseofhiskinshipwithOlweofAlqualonde;andmanyofhispeoplewentwithhim,retracingtheirstepsinsorrow,untiltheybeheldoncemorethefarbeamoftheMindonuponTunastillshininginthenight,andsocameatlasttoValinor.TheretheyreceivedthepardonoftheValar,andFinarfinwassettoruletheremnantoftheNoldorintheBlessedRealm.Buthissonswerenotwithhim,fortheywouldnotforsakethesonsofFingolfin;andallFingolfin’sfolkwentforwardstill,feelingtheconstraintoftheirkinshipandthewillofFeanor,andfearingtofacethedoomoftheValar,sincenotallofthemhadbeenguiltlessoftheKinslayingatAlqualonde.MoreoverFingonandTurgonwereboldandfieryofheart,andloathtoabandonanytasktowhichtheyhadputtheirhandsuntilthebitterend,ifbitteritmustbe.Sothemainhostheldon,andswiftlytheevilthatwasforetoldbeganitswork.
TheNoldorcameatlastfarintothenorthofArda;andtheysawthefirstteethoftheicethatfloatedinthesea,andknewthattheyweredrawingnightotheHelcaraxe.ForbetweenthelandofAmanthatinthenorthcurvedeastward,andtheeast-shoresofEndor(whichisMiddle-earth)thatborewestward,therewasanarrowstrait,throughwhichthechillwatersoftheEncirclingSeaandthewavesofBelegaerflowedtogether,andtherewerevastfogsandmistsofdeathlycold,andthesea-streamswerefilledwithclashinghillsoficeandthegrindingoficedeep-sunken.
SuchwastheHelcaraxe,andtherenoneyethaddaredtotreadsavetheValaronlyandUngoliantThereforeFeanorhaltedandtheNoldordebatedwhatcoursetheyshouldnowtake.Buttheybegantosufferanguishfromthecold,andtheclingingmiststhroughwhichnogleamofstarcouldpierce;andmanyrepentedoftheroadandbegantomurmur,especiallythosethatfollowedFingolfin,cursingFeanor,andnaminghimasthecauseofallthewoesoftheEldar.
