SointhatplacewhichwascalledLosgarattheoutletoftheFirthofDrengistendedthefairestvesselsthateversailedthesea,inagreatburning,brightandterrible.AndFingolfinandhispeoplesawthelightafaroff,redbeneaththeclouds;andtheyknewthattheywerebetrayed.ThiswasthefirstfruitsoftheKinslayingandtheDoomoftheNoldor.
ThenFingolfinseeingthatFeanorhadlefthimtoperishinAramanorreturninshametoValinorwasfilledwithbitterness;buthedesirednowasneverbeforetocomebysomewaytoMiddle-earth,andmeetFeanoragain.Andheandhishostwanderedlonginmisery,buttheirvalourandendurancegrewwithhardship;fortheywereamightypeople,theelderchildrenundyingofEluIluvatar,butnew-comefromtheBlessedRealm,andnotyetwearywiththewearinessofEarth.Thefireoftheirheartswasyoung,andledbyFingolfinandhissons,andbyFinrodandGaladriel,theydaredtopassintothebitterestNorth;andfindingnootherwaytheyenduredatlasttheterroroftheHelcaraxeandthecruelhillsofice.FewofthedeedsoftheNoldorthereaftersurpassedthatdesperatecrossinginhardihoodorwoe.
ThereElenwethewifeofTurgonwaslost,andmanyothersperishedalso;anditwaswithalessenedhostthatFingolfinsetfootatlastupontheOuterLands.SmallloveforFeanororhissonshadthosethatmarchedatlastbehindhim,andblewtheirtrumpetsinMiddle-earthatthefirstrisingoftheMoon.
