ButOlweanswered:’Werenouncenofriendship.Butitmaybethepartofafriendtorebukeafriend’sfolly.AndwhentheNoldorwelcomedusandgaveusaid,otherwisethenyouspoke:inthelandofAmanweweretodwellforever,asbrotherswhosehousesstandsidebyside.Butasforourwhiteships:thoseyougaveusnot.WelearnednotthatcraftfromtheNoldor,butfromtheLordsoftheSea;andthewhitetimberswewroughtwithourownhands,andthewhitesailswerewovenbyourwivesandourdaughters.Thereforewewillneithergivethemnorsellthemforanyleagueorfriendship.ForIsaytoyou,FeanorsonofFinwe,thesearetousasarethegemsoftheNoldor:theworkofourhearts,whoselikeweshallnotmakeagain.’
ThereuponFeanorlefthim,andsatindarkthoughtbeyondthewallsofAlqualonde,untilhishostwasassembled.Whenhejudgedthathisstrengthwasenough,hewenttotheHavenoftheSwansandbegantomantheshipsthatwereanchoredthereandtotakethemawaybyforce.ButtheTeleriwithstoodhim,andcastmanyoftheNoldorintothesea.Thenswordsweredrawn,andabitterfightwasfoughtupontheships,andaboutthelamplitquaysandpiersoftheHaven,andevenuponthegreatarchofitsgate.ThricethepeopleofFeanorweredrivenback,andmanywereslainuponeitherside;butthevanguardoftheNoldorweresuccouredbyFingonwiththeforemostofthehostofFingolfin,whocomingupfoundabattlejoinedandtheirownkinfalling,andrushedinbeforetheyknewrightlythecauseofthequarrel;somethoughtindeedthattheTelerihadsoughttowaylaythemarchoftheNoldoratthebiddingoftheValar.
