ButasthemindofFeanorcooledandtookcounselheperceivedoverlatethatallthesegreatcompanieswouldneverovercomethelongleaguestothenorth,norcrosstheseasatthelast,savewiththeaidofships;yetitwouldneedlongtimeandtoiltobuildsogreatafleet,evenwerethereanyamongtheNoldorskilledinthatcraft.HeresolvednowthereforetopersuadetheTeleri,everfriendstotheNoldor,tojoinwiththem;andinhisrebellionhethoughtthatthustheblissofValinormightbefurtherdiminishedandhispowerforwaruponMorgothbeincreased.HehastenedthentoAlqualonde,andspoketotheTeleriashehadspokenbeforeinTirion.
ButtheTeleriwereunmovedbyaughtthathecouldsay.Theyweregrievedindeedatthegoingoftheirkinsfolkandlongfriends,butwouldratherdissuadethemthanaidthem;andnoshipwouldtheylend,norhelpinthebuilding,againstthewilloftheValar.Asforthemselves,theydesirednownootherhomebutthestrandsofEldamar,andnootherlordthanOlwe,princeofAlqualonde.AndhehadneverlenteartoMorgoth,norwelcomedhimtohisland,andhetrustedstillthatUlmoandtheothergreatamongtheValarwouldredressthehurtsofMorgoth,andthatthenightwouldpassyettoanewdawn.ThenFeanorgrewwrathful,forhestillfeareddelay;andhotlyhespoketoOlwe.
