ThusatlasttheTeleriwereovercome,andagreatpartoftheirmarinersthatdweltinAlqualondewerewickedlyslain.FortheNoldorwerebecomefierceanddesperate,andtheTelerihadlessstrength,andwerearmedforthemostpartbutwithslenderbows.ThentheNoldordrewawaytheirwhiteshipsandmannedtheiroarsasbesttheymight,androwedthemnorthalongthecoast.AndOlwecalleduponOsse,buthecamenot,foritwasnotpermittedbytheValarthatthefightoftheNoldorshouldbehinderedbyforce.ButUinenweptforthemarinersoftheTeleri;andthesearoseinwrathagainsttheslayers,sothatmanyoftheshipswerewreckedandthoseinthemdrowned.OftheenslavingatAlqualondemoreistoldinthatlamentwhichisnamedNoldolante,theFalloftheNoldor,thatMaglormadeerehewaslost.
NonethelessthegreaterpartoftheNoldorescaped,andwhenthestormwaspasttheyheldontheircourse,somebyshipandsomebyland;butthewaywaslongandevermoreevilastheywentforward.Aftertheyhadmarchedforagreatwhileintheunmeasurednight,theycameatlengthtothenorthernconfinesoftheGuardedRealm,uponthebordersoftheemptywasteofAramanwhichweremountainousandcold.Theretheybeheldsuddenlyadarkfigurestandinghighuponarockthatlookeddownupontheshore.SomesaythatitwasMandoshimself,andnolesserheraldofManwe.Andtheyheardaloudvoice,solemnandterrible,thatbadethemstandandgiveear.Thenallhaltedandstoodstill,andfromendtoendofthehostsoftheNoldorthevoicewasheardspeakingthecurseandprophecywhichiscalledtheProphecyoftheNorth,andtheDoomoftheNoldor.Muchitforetoldindarkwords,whichtheNoldorunderstoodnotuntilthewoesindeedafterbefellthem;butallheardthecursethatwasuttereduponthosethatwouldnotstaynorseekthedoomandpardonoftheValar.
