Therehedelvedanewhisvastvaultsanddungeons,andabovetheirgatesherearedthethreefoldpeaksofThangorodrim,andagreatreekofdarksmokewaseverwreathedaboutthem.Therecountlessbecamethehostsofhisbeastsandhisdemons,andtheraceoftheOrcs,bredlongbefore,grewandmultipliedinthebowelsoftheearth.DarknowfelltheshadowonBeleriand,asistoldhereafter,butinAngbandMorgothforgedforhimselfagreatcrownofiron,andhecalledhimselfKingoftheWorld.IntokenofthishesettheSilmarilsinhiscrown.Hishandswereburnedblackbythetouchofthosehallowedjewels,andblacktheyremainedeverafter;norwasheeverfreefromthepainoftheburning,andtheangerofthepain.Thatcrownhenevertookfromhishead,thoughitsweightbecameadeadlyweariness.NeverbutonceonlydidhedepartforawhilesecretlyfromhisdomainintheNorth;seldomindeeddidheleavethedeepplacesofhisfortress,butgovernedhisarmiesfromhisnorthernthrone.
Andonceonlyalsodidhehimselfwieldweapon,whilehisrealmlasted.
Fornow,morethaninthedaysofUtumnoerehispridewashumbled,hishatreddevouredhim,andinthedominationofhisservantsandtheinspiringofthemwithlustofevilhespenthisspirit.NonethelesshismajestyasoneoftheValarlongremained,thoughturnedtoterror,andbeforehisfaceallsavethemightiestsankintoadarkpitoffear.
NowwhenitwasknownthatMorgothhadescapedfromValinorandpursuitwasunavailing,theValarremainedlongseatedindarknessintheRingofDoom,andtheMaiarandtheVanyarstoodbesidethemandwept;buttheNoldorforthemostpartreturnedtoTirionandmournedforthedarkeningoftheirfaircity.ThroughthedimravineoftheCalaciryafogsdriftedinfromtheshadowyseasandmantleditstowers,andthelampoftheMindonburnedpaleinthegloom.
